The District – Rock Island

2010 Bead Toss

27 boxes of beads (855 pounds) was shipped at 1PM this afternoon, May 5, from Louisiana!!!!

Check out some photos from last year’s Friday night festivities. See Flickr link on the right or click here. And here’s a video clip of some of the bands.

Gumbo Ya Ya Time!

Gumbo and More

Gumbo, jambalaya, crawfish etoufee, shrimp creole, red beans & rice, and beignets will all be available at Gumbo Ya Ya. (And if you don’t like New Orleans-style food you can get traditional festival food.)

Wikipedia says about zydeco, “Usually fast tempo and dominated by the button or piano accordion and a form of a washboard known as a ‘rub-board,’ ‘scrub-board,’ or frottoir, zydeco music was originally created at house dances, where families and friends gathered for socializing.” We just like to call it happy music that’s great for dancing!

At this year’s event you’ll find more than just zydeco.  Blues, New Orleans jazz, funk, French Creole, and some good ol’ New Orleans street music. Get here to listen to some of the best bands – live on two stages!

It’s just about time for Gumbo Ya Ya! The beads are here, the bands are excited, the porta potties are ordered, the t-shirts are on their way, the food vendors are committed, the beer is chillin’, and the volunteers are signing up. Looks like this year’s Gumbo Ya Ya – now 17 years old – will be one of the best ever. Hope to see you here! Friday, June 12 starts at 5 p.m. and Saturday, June 13 starts at noon.
